Program Overview

The Kirkwood Rotary Ramble is a charitable 5k/10k run/walk through the streets of downtown Kirkwood. The proceeds of the race benefit local Kirkwood charities. The race takes place every year the weekend before the Greentree Festival.
In 2016 we started our School Challenge Program. The program aims to get kids healthy and interested in running, all while learning about Rotary and helping their community. Elementary and Middle school students from schools in the Kirkwood area are invited to run in the race at a much-reduced cost. The elementary school and middle school with the greatest number of students registered each win $500.
Middle schoolers run for time in the normal 5k race. Most parents either pay to run with their child, or wait at the Aquatic Center, where the race starts and finishes.
Elementary schoolers run a short ~1 mile Fun Run an hour after the 5k/10k race begins, which circles the block twice and finishes at the normal finish line. Race volunteers are at every corner with signs and help, and the police stop traffic across Geyer for them. Parents may run with their children for free, but most wait on the side of the course and then move to the finish line.

The 2016 School Challenge was a Success!

Total, we had 29 School Challenge runners in 2016 - not bad for our first year!
2016 Elementary School Winner: Tillman Elementary - $500
2016 Middle School Winner: Nipher Middle - $500
The beneficiaries of 2016's race were Hands on Kirkwood, Parents as Teachers, and Project NOW. We donated around $8,000 to these organizations.
